Ned Schwing mentioned in his reference book to the Model 1890 & 1906 that Winchester commenced proof marking them in 1908… I do not know if that may be exact, but will suppose that it is. The “WP” evidence mark was utilized following the barrel and receiver have been mated, assembled and finished. This is very apparent to the firearms manufactured within the late teenagers via early 30s when the blue flaked (popped) off in the event the evidence was struck about the receiver frame.
